More than a year ago, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz shared that he was co-writing his first graphic novel, Dying Inside, with Hannah Klein. Now, after being given away during Free Comic Book Day, AP is teaming with Vault to reveal the first chapter.
The story centers around Ash, an anxiety-riddled, music-obsessed 16-year-old who can rattle off presentations about the importance of Elliott Smith on a dime. More often than not, she gives into apathy and eventually believes death will provide relief — from the medication, doctor appointments, and extreme lows of her chronic depression. That leads her to plot out a spectacular end, complete with a proper outfit and soundtrack, but the knife she ordered online is charmed with a protection spell, giving her immortality instead. The story — immaculately crafted and more than a little emo — brims with bite, pop culture references, and dark humor in equal measure.
Before you dig in, please note that this book includes a discussion of suicide, suicidal ideation, and the depiction of self-harm. This is in the hope that it will help readers feel less alone, but its content may be triggering. If you are struggling, sharing your feelings with people you trust is important. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is 988 — call or text 24/7 for free and confidential support.
